The project: The Human Show explores mental health and follows a day in the life of one confused specimen – Felix – and the two voices in his head.

The story: Set inside Felix’s mind and hosted by the personification of his anxiety and depression, The Human Show is a dark and surrealist musical comedy – think Peep Show meets Flight of the Conchords.

After a hugely successful debut performance at the 2018 Adelaide Fringe – playing to sell-out crowds – we felt the pressure to deliver something funnier and cleverer. Of course, we stuck to the things we were good at – but we did them better. We created an airtight concept and wrote around that – building everything, from content to our set, from a solid conceptual foundation.

The 2019 Adelaide Fringe was a success – we sold out. But that was our home crowd. The only way to truly know if it's any good is to take it to the top. The 2019 Edinburgh Fringe. As two artists among more than 50,000, it's easy to feel lost and overwhelmed. But, we knew we had something good. We didn't have the money to compete with the big boys, but we're Those Big Bois, so we did what we do best – we created promotional content, wrote promotional songs, performed at variety shows and charmed the pants off as many civilians as we could. And it made quite a compelling case for word-of-mouth. By the second show, we were turning people away. And by the sixth show, we were cramming more seats in.

Admittedly, The Human Show wasn't backed with a walloping campaign, funded by ritzy clients or built from an airtight strategy. But, if you think of it as a piece of pure creativity and writing, it's my best work. There's also a huge amount of admin and management that goes into a stage piece – and even more when you're taking it overseas. I was in charge of financials, equipment, accommodation and marketing.
